Research and Development Initiatives and Activities of TVET Development Institute (TDI)

Introduction

The TVET Development Institute (TDI) operates as the dedicated research and development arm of the Myanmar Private TVET Association (MPTA). Established as part of MPTA’s strategic work plan in 2023, TDI seeks to strengthen the national TVET system through innovative research, development, and capacity-building initiatives. The foundation of TDI was conceptualized during the MPTA’s annual review and planning meeting in January 2022 and further supported by the Advisory Board’s discussions.

Key Activities and Focus Areas

TDI has prioritized the following activities to drive its mission forward:

  • Research and Development
  • Conducting labor market assessments to identify emerging occupational needs.
  • Developing a comprehensive directory of TVET institutions and resources.
  • Establishing MPTA qualification standards and market-relevant TVET curricula.
  • Recognizing TVET certifications and their alignment with industry requirements.

  • Workshop on Priority Research and Development Areas (25 August 2024)

  • Archiving Occupational Roles and Skill Set Requirements Across Industries
  • Cataloging Certification Requirements for Employment and Contractual Engagements in Various Industries
  • Documenting Models of School-Industry Collaboration: A Comprehensive Repository
  • Developing an Archive for TVET Teachers’ Competency Standards Frameworks
  • Compiling a Directory of Private and Public TVET Training Service Providers
  • Creating a Database of Industries Practicing Apprenticeship Programs

Research on Data Collection, Data Analysis and Recommendations

  • Assessing the Effectiveness of In-Company Training Programs in Myanmar Businesses: A Data Driven Approach
  • Identifying and Addressing the Training Needs of Private TVET Teachers: Insights into Upskilling, Reskilling, and Continuous Professional Development
  • Exploring Financial Support Mechanisms in Private TVET Sector for Students, Teachers, and Schools: A Comprehensive Analysis and Recommendations
  • Evaluating Curriculum Alignment with Industry Needs: Data Insights and Strategic Recommendations
  • Analyzing the Impacts of On-the-Job Training: Evidence-Based Findings and Best Practices
  • Integrating Sustainable Green Skills Development into TVET Curricula: Data Analysis and Strategic Implementation Recommendations
Provisional Establishment Roadmap

The following steps are part of TDI’s roadmap for its initial phase in Research & Development:

  • Formation of a dedicated R&D team.
  • Establishment of infrastructure, including an office and library.
  • Compilation of existing TVET literature.
  • Participation in regional associations such as ASEAN TVET Council and RAVTE.
  • Development of an operational plan for R&D activities.
